With the exhibition “Schöner Shoppen? – Analysis of inner-city shopping centres as an element of urban development” the Zentrum Baukultur Rheinland-Pfalz in Mainz opens its new location. Here, the Zentrum Baukultur picks up on a virulent topic of urban development not only for Mainz, but also in Ingelheim, Koblenz, Kaiserslautern, Ludwigshafen, Trier and Zweibrücken in different stages of realisation, and in addition, it shows pioneering examples from Munich, Münster, Leipzig, Bern and Maastricht.

The major theme of city and trade, groundbreaking department store architecture and the development of shopping centres, coming from the USA, from the “green field” via the periphery of our cities right into the centre, forms the introduction to the topic.

The historical development of retail architecture is so varied and far-reaching that this exhibition by no means provides an all-encompassing insight into the subject. Rather, the important stations leading to today’s urban shopping centres, which are the main theme of the exhibition, have been taken up.

On the basis of seven projects in Rhineland-Palatinate, the presentation approaches the topic in a first step at the state level. Other exemplary supra-regional projects show which innovative or successful trends can be observed in the development of the centers. Finally, recommendations for action for the successful integration of the inner-city projects are compiled.
