Am Tacheles Berlin

With the Am Tacheles urban quarter, one of the last large gaps in the city’s building stock has been closed in a prominent location in Berlin. A new area for living, working, shopping, gastronomy and culture has been created around the former “Kunsthaus Tacheles” in the Mitte district. Our office realized two residential buildings and an office building here.

The office and commercial building marks the entrance to the area as a corner building on the busy Oranienburger Strasse. Similar to the Kunsthaus Tacheles, it is constructed as a reduced steel skeleton building. With its floor-to-ceiling windows and no load-bearing interior walls, it stands for the transparency and flexibility of new working environments, to whose needs it can be easily adapted.

One of the two new residential buildings is centrally located in the district, on the newly created Aaron-Bernstein-Platz. The apartments open up with floor-to-ceiling windows both to the lively town square and to quiet, green courtyards at the rear of the building. Honeycomb-shaped, slightly protruding loggias give rhythm to the façade and lend it a striking presence. The second residential building on the quiet Johannisstrasse is designed as an elongated structure with smaller residential units.

All three new buildings fit into the large ensemble, the layout and scale of which is based on the historical parceling. In combination with the public paths and squares, the new buildings provide a piece of urban repair that continues the urban vibrancy of the existing quarter.
